Dental Cleaning 101

Dental Cleaning 101

Cleaning your teeth is an essential part of your daily routine because it prevents the buildup of bacteria and keeps your teeth looking strong and healthy. But just because you are cleaning your teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste doesn’t mean that you are brushing them properly. You need to learn the most effective dental cleaning techniques.

Aside from brushing your teeth, you should also go for a professional dental cleaning once in a while. Unfortunately, some people dread dental cleaning because of the prodding, occasional jaw discomfort, and strange noise. That’s why it is important to know what this procedure involves before you go for it. This article offers you the actual dental cleaning 101.

Physical Examination

Every professional dental cleaning procedure starts with a physical examination of your teeth and other parts of your mouth. Your dental hygienist will use a small mirror to examine your mouth for signs of inflamed gums (gingivitis) and other potential complications. If you have major dental complications, they will seek the opinion of a dentist on how to proceed.

Removing Plaque

Once your dental hygienist determines that you qualify for dental cleaning, they will use the small mirror and a scaler to remove plaque and tartar from your gum line and between your teeth. During this procedure, you will experience scraping, but it’s normal.

Persistent Toothpaste Cleaning

Once the plaque has been removed, your dental hygienist will then brush your teeth with a high-powered electric brush, which often makes a crunching noise. Although the noise sounds scary, this kind of brushing gives you a deep clean and removes any plaque left behind by the scaler. And although the toothpaste tastes and smells like regular toothpaste, it has a gritty steadiness that brushes your teeth gently.

Professional Flossing

While it is important to floss your teeth regularly at home, always go for professional flossing once in a while. During this type of flossing, your dental hygienist will go deeper between your teeth, locating any potential trouble spots. Professional flossing also helps to remove any leftover plaque or toothpaste left during the cleaning process.

Rinsing

Once the flossing is done, your hygienist will rinse your mouth using liquid fluoride to remove any debris.

Apply Fluoride Treatment

This is the final step of the dental cleaning process. Fluoride treatment is applied as a protectant for your teeth to prevent cavities for a couple of months. Your dental hygienist will also paint your teeth with fluoride varnish to allow you to eat and drink immediately after the cleaning without a problem.

  • My hygienist was Claudia, and I now have a best friend forever. She was so welcoming and kind, put me completely at ease, walked me through all of the procedures, costs, and reasons why, and introduced me to everyone who walked in or by the door. Dr. Smith was equally as helpful and amazing. Every person went out of their way to ensure my comfort and understanding. I NEVER write reviews, and was so impressed that I couldn't wait to get home and write one!

  • We love IHDC! They do everything possible to ensure our safety, and Alaine is an absolute gem! She treats my daughter with the patience of a saint and we love her for it! The whole team is amazing!

I’ve been going here for years but when I had my daughter, there was no question about where i would take her for her dental needs. They are so great with her and she is never nervous when we go because they just radiate positivity and make her feel so calm and relaxed. I can’t recommend them enough. Oh, they are also really great with Botox 😉

  • Could not possibly thank Dr. Houck, Gabby, and staff enough for the wonderful care I receive. In addition to excellent dentistry, their compassionate approach and communication really sets them apart. They are always kind, caring, and take time to explain things in detail. Easy to contact the office with any needs, and they are always quick to respond. Highly recommend.

  • Just wanted to leave a quick review on Claudia! She is an excellent dental hygienist. She is very thorough with her cleanings, she has a sweet personality and takes the time to explain things to you. I 10/10 would recommend Claudia to all of my friends and family.
