Can I get Braces as an Adult?

While dental braces are common among children and teenagers, adults too can wear them. So, the prevalent claim that adults cannot get braces is a fallacy. Millions of adults in the United States wear braces. This article tells you the reasons why you should wear dental braces as an adult.

Straightening Your Teeth

Old age causes your body to change significantly. For instance, the shape of your mouth and jaws may change when you grow old because your jawbone loses density, causing your teeth to tilt. This leads to crowded teeth, which causes serious discomfort when eating and swallowing. You’ll also have trouble cleaning your overlapping teeth.

With dental braces, you can straighten your teeth and restore your youthful smile. This will also improve your oral health. You can wear these braces at any age, provided you have enough teeth in your mouth. In fact, most of the adults wearing dental braces are over 50 years old.

Improve Your Smile

Since crooked teeth are difficult to clean, you are likely to have bad breath and decayed teeth. This will ruin your self-confidence because you’ll always shy away from talking or smiling in front of people. When you straighten your teeth with braces, you will enhance the quality of your teeth and restore your natural smile, thus improving your self-confidence. Fortunately, dental braces can easily straighten even the most crooked teeth.

As your jawbone continues to lose density, it will shrink causing a misalignment of your upper and lower teeth. It will also change your overall bite. This is normally referred to as malocclusion, and it can lead to a crossbite, overbite, underbite, or open bite. This problem will make it difficult for you to chew due to the irregular distribution of the biting force.

This will eventually lead to broken or cracked teeth. If you don’t realign your teeth and bite as soon as possible, your teeth will ultimately fall off. With dental braces, your crooked teeth will be straightened, preventing malocclusion and other related problems.

Prevent Speech Impediment

The alignment of your teeth plays a huge role in enabling you to speak correctly. If you have an overbite or spaced teeth, your speech may be obstructed, making you feel embarrassed when you are speaking in front of people. Although dental braces won’t cure all speech impediments, they will reduce their severity and make them less apparent.

  • My hygienist was Claudia, and I now have a best friend forever. She was so welcoming and kind, put me completely at ease, walked me through all of the procedures, costs, and reasons why, and introduced me to everyone who walked in or by the door. Dr. Smith was equally as helpful and amazing. Every person went out of their way to ensure my comfort and understanding. I NEVER write reviews, and was so impressed that I couldn't wait to get home and write one!

  • We love IHDC! They do everything possible to ensure our safety, and Alaine is an absolute gem! She treats my daughter with the patience of a saint and we love her for it! The whole team is amazing!

  • If you’re a believer in good vibes and positive energy then this is the place for you. Everyone here is so warm & inviting. They really do feel like family, ya know, the ones you actually like! I’ve been going here for years but when I had my daughter, there was no question about where i would take her for her dental needs. They are so great with her and she is never nervous when we go because they just radiate positivity and make her feel so calm and relaxed. I can’t recommend them enough. Oh, they are also really great with Botox 😉

  • Could not possibly thank Dr. Houck, Gabby, and staff enough for the wonderful care I receive. In addition to excellent dentistry, their compassionate approach and communication really sets them apart. They are always kind, caring, and take time to explain things in detail. Easy to contact the office with any needs, and they are always quick to respond. Highly recommend.

  • Just wanted to leave a quick review on Claudia! She is an excellent dental hygienist. She is very thorough with her cleanings, she has a sweet personality and takes the time to explain things to you. I 10/10 would recommend Claudia to all of my friends and family.
